palimpsest

A manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original writing has been effaced to make room for later writing, but traces remain visible. Metaphorically, something layered with complex history.
Etymology
From Greek "palimpsestos" (scraped again), from "palin" (again) + "psen" (to rub smooth). Ancient scribes reused valuable parchment by scraping off previous text.
